Balance beats hyper-optimisation. Strengthening one dimension can quietly weaken another. Running the air conditioning keeps a home safe in a heatwave, but it also strains the grid and adds to the warming. We design for the whole system, not a single threat.
The bunker paradox
Walls alone don't make a safe haven.
Isolation feels safe, but over time it wears down skills, support and morale. Research led by political scientist Daniel Aldrich, covering disasters from Kobe and Katrina to Tōhoku and Christchurch, found that social ties are among the strongest predictors of survival and recovery.
